1. Report this immediately to your University Credit Union. We will assist you in closing your current account and opening a new one. This is much safer than just placing stop payments on checks or ACH items as these will only last 6-12 months. Thieves and fraudsters are aware of this and will wait a year before trying to pass stolen checks. It is very important that you close all accounts that you know or believe have been compromised and/or fraudulently opened.
2. Request and review your credit report by contacting a reporting agency. Place a fraud alert on your credit report. By calling one of the three major credit reporting agencies, the other two will be notified. University Credit Union reports to Equifax.

3. Dispute in writing all accounts and/or charges you did not make or authorize to be made. Keep copies of all correspondence for future reference.
4. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC can be contacted at their hotline 1-877-438-4338, www.ftc.gov or you can send a letter to Identity Theft Clearing House Federal Trade Commission 600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC 20580. Keep a copy of this complaint and call the hotline if you have additional information after filing the original complaint.
5. File a police report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place. Ask the police to incorporate the FTC identity theft report into the police report. Keep both of these together with all correspondence with the credit bureaus and creditors for future reference.
6. If you are missing funds from your account, your financial institution will ask you to complete a fraud affidavit. These must be notarized and submitted with a copy of a police report that has been filed.
What is a fraud alert?
A fraud alert is a notice on your credit report to help keep an identity thief from opening accounts using your information. There are two types of alerts: and initial alert and extended alert
1. An initial fraud alert will stay on your credit report for 90 days. You may ask for this alert if you suspect that you are or will be a victim of identity theft. This can be used when a wallet has been stolen and or you have responded to a phishing scam. When placing this initial fraud alert, you are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three reporting agencies. You need to review these reports and work to restore any misuse.
2. An extended fraud alert stays on your credit report for seven years. You can have an extended alert if you are a victim of identity theft and provide a copy of an Identity Theft Report to the reporting agency. When you place an extended fraud alert you are entitled to two free credit reports within twelve months from each of the three reporting agencies. In addition your name will be removed for five years from marketing lists used to send pre-screened credit card offers.
To place or remove a fruad alert you will need to provide proof of your identity. This may include your social security number, name, address and other personal information required by the reporting agency.
Depending on the fraud alert placed creditor must contact you and take reasonable steps to confirm your identity. This may cause a delay when you are trying to obtain credit so keeping the contact information current is extremely important.
